Rack Colocation – What Are The Benefits?

22/07/2020 by Chris Allen Leave a Comment

What is Rack Colocation?

Rack Colocation is a service where you can keep and host your servers at a Data Centre. Depending on the Data Centre this can range from just a single server, all the way up to a full rack.

Rack Colocation typically is for people or businesses who own and use multiple servers – like an IT Service Provider for example.

Typically Rack Colocation comes in 3 sizes:

  • Quarter Rack
  • Half Rack
  • Full Rack

However, if you wanted to use Colocation for a small number of servers, some Data Centres offer Single Server Colocation.

What’s Included:

Typically, Colocation services will make sure your server is always accessible and kept in good condition. The core components offered are:

  • Internet connections
  • Power feeds
  • Temperature control
  • Physical rack space
  • Physical security at Data Centre

With most of these, there is an option to upgrade/adjust the service you receive. An example of this would be wanting A/B Power or a faster internet connection.

What Are the Benefits of Rack Colocation?

Like any other Colocation, Rack Colocation has the same benefits:

  • Guaranteed Connection and Uptime
  • Data Centre built for redundancy (generator, multiple internet connections)
  • Mitigates huge upfront costs of self-hosting
  • Mitigates having to perform infrastructure maintenance
  • Stops you having to maintain cooling systems/generators
  • Access to your servers 24/7
  • Kept safe by Data Centre’s physical security

Benefits Unique to Rack Colocation

This can differ from provider to provider, but typically Rack Colocation customers get additional benefits. A big one is that you have a unique rack that you can use how you want. Some people may fill this with servers, others will add additional PDU’s – the choice is yours!

Another big benefit is true 24/7 access. A lot of Data Centre’s will have escorted access for single server customers, as they will share a Rack with other customers. As such, visiting your server out of office hours can mean having to call a member of staff out. As a result of this, you could potentially receive an out of hours charge.

Rack Colocation customers tend to get given access details such as gate/door codes and keys, allowing them to access their rack and servers whenever they want! This can be very useful if maintenance is needed to be done at a quiet time of the day (such as late at night or early morning).

Do the Benefits Outweigh the Cost?

It is no secret that self-hosting servers can be very expensive.

There are the huge upfront costs of all the equipment, infrastructure and physical space needed to host the servers. Then on top of that, the regular maintenance needed to keep it all in top condition.

We find that usually, it is only worth hosting your servers if you have a large quantity of them and plan on expanding too. This way the costs will pay for themselves in the long run. However, Data Centres use this approach to their advantage. As a result, they are custom designed with hosting several servers in mind. Included in this is a detailed expansion plan.

Keep Your Office from Being a Server Room

One thing a lot of people do not remember at first when considering self-hosting/Colocation is the sheer amount of physical space needed! Servers take up a huge amount of space.

Colocation can take the servers out of your office, so it stays being your office and not a server room! Much better for your staff and customers!

Colocation Server Hosting – How It Helps

17/07/2020 by Chris Allen Leave a Comment

Colocation Server Hosting

Intro

In this Digital Age, it is now more important than ever to have your digital services and platforms to have a strong foundation. Put simply, reliable hosting is key for IT Service Providers.

Having your server(s) comes with an array of benefits, one of the biggest being that you have complete control over how you use it and what for. However, owning your server can also come with a few downsides as well – Colocation server hosting can help to reduce or eliminate some of these.

Cost

Aside from the initial cost of the hardware for your server, there are also some other big costs which people sometimes forget. The biggest extra costs are:

  • Cooling
  • Power
  • Infrastructure
  • Connection
  • Redundancy
  • Physical hosting

All of these can be overlooked but are key to running servers effectively with little to no downtime. Self-hosting is expensive on a small scale. Unless you need full racks of servers, it is usually cheaper to work with a Data Centre offering Colocation server hosting.

Data Centre’s are purpose-built with server hosting in mind. They will have all the necessary infrastructure in place to ensure a smooth installation of your server and so that it stands a good chance of always being online.

Space

This one is self-explanatory. Server racks, the infrastructure, cable management, power and cooling all take up a lot of space. Often unless you have specifically planned for this, you just simply will not have enough physical space.

As mentioned earlier, Data Centres are built for this exact reason. This means that Colocation server hosting can let you have the benefits of using your servers, but without turning your office into a makeshift server room.

Noise

This one goes together with the last point. Servers by nature are often very noisy – especially when you have tens of them in a single room. You would be surprised about how little else you can hear in a server room.

Colocation server hosting moves your servers away from your office – giving you the peace you need to look after your business and customers.

Cooling

Servers get hot. Especially during the Summer months. It can be tricky to cool down a room full of servers without having the proper setup for it.

Colocation server hosting makes use of a Data Centre’s purpose-built server rooms, where often a lot of money has been invested in the cooling systems and temperature monitoring systems. These can range from fans to water cooling systems.

Security

Keeping your servers at a different location to your main office adds an extra layer of protection. Should the worst happen, and your main office is struck by fire/flood or even theft – your servers and data would still be kept safe, allowing for a speedier recovery.

A good Data Centre will have multiple security measures in place, such as CCTV, access control and backups to ensure your servers and data remain safe.

Update: Remote Hands During COVID-19

26/05/2020 by Chris Allen Leave a Comment

Hi everyone, just another quick update on how our Remote Hands Policy is currently working during the COVID-19 enforced lockdown.
Just as a reminder, we are still mostly working from home where possible, as per the Government guidelines.
Previously on weekday mornings, we would have a Technician in to carry out essential Data Centre checks. During this time period, we were also carrying out any Remote Hands support.
However, now that the Government’s lockdown restrictions have been made more flexible, we thought we’d adjust to doing the same.

Our updated Remote Hands Support is now as follows:

– A Technician will be on-site at 8 am – 10 am (Mon – Fri)
-A Technician will also be on-site at 4 pm – 6 pm (Mon – Fri)
During these two time slots, we will be able to respond and carry out any Remote Hands Support you may need. So if you need Remote Hands in the near future, bear these times in mind.
We understand that these time restrictions can be inconvenient, so we appreciate you’re understanding during this lockdown period. We hope to get increasingly more flexible until we can open up as normal, this will, however, be following Government guidelines. We’ll keep you updated, as and when.
If you’re not sure if you have Remote Hands Included or aren’t sure what we can and can’t do for you with Remote Hands, please feel free to get in touch with Support. Likewise, if you need emergency support, again please get in touch with support.

Remote Hands During COVID-19 Lockdown

11/05/2020 by Chris Allen Leave a Comment

Hi everyone, just a quick update on how our Remote Hands Policy is currently working during the COVID-19 enforced lockdown.
We are currently working from home as per the Government guidelines. However once a day, (usually first thing in the morning, Monday-Friday) a member staff attends the site for approximately 90 minutes to carry out the essential Data Centre checks. We are happy to provide remote hands support during this time with any issues you might be having.
We understand that these time restrictions can be inconvenient, so we appreciate you’re understanding during this lockdown period.
If you’re not sure if you have Remote Hands Included or aren’t sure what we can and can’t do for you with Remote Hands, please feel free to get in touch with Support. Likewise, if you need emergency support, again please get in touch with support.
We’re happy to help with whatever we can.

Status Page Upgrade (May 2020)

06/05/2020 by Chris Allen Leave a Comment

Staus Page Upgrade

We have recently done some work on our Status Page, to give it some more functionality and increase the value it provides both us and you.

The two biggest features that have been implemented are:

  • The new scheduled maintenance section
  • All V routers are on the page now

A New Scheduled Maintenance Section

This basically does what it ‘says on the tin’. It’s an area of the Status Page that contains any pre-planned or upcoming maintenance. Even better is that it has a feature that allows you to ‘subscribe’ to it. This will mean you are sent notifications about upcoming work as and when we update it. If you want to stay up to date with the work we’re doing, this is the best way!

Of course, for any major maintenance, we’ll still be updating the blog, email and social media to make sure you know.

All V-Routers Are Now on the Page

Another simple one. The Status Page will now show all of the V-Routers and their conditions, so you can check them yourself if you think you might be experiencing any issues.

That’s all for now, we’ll be sure to keep you updated with any other changes that crop in the near future.

If you want to see the newly upgraded Status Page yourself, you can click here to visit.

Number Ports on Hold Due to COVID-19

25/03/2020 by Chris Allen Leave a Comment

Number Ports on Hold Due to COVID-19

Hi Everyone, here is another quick update – this time on number porting.

Due to COVID-19, it appears BT (Openreach) have shut there porting desk in India without informing suppliers – Annoying we know! As you can imagine this will have a knock-on effect of the majority of UK and will result in number ports failing.

So in order to prevent unnecessary charges being applied and waste people’s time we will be queueing all new and existing port requests until further notice.

We will update you further as we are informed of any changes and apologies for the delay in this service.

If you have any questions about how this might affect you, please contact our support team.
